MAILROOM FURNITURE

NOTE ** Hamilton Sorter makes a wide variety of high
quality, ergonomically designed mailroom furniture
that is completely modular and reconfigurable. All
sorting units include adjustable shelves with full
width index label strips.

NOTE ** This specification is designed to accompany a
drawing showing the size, arrangement, and internal
fittings of each mailroom unit. The basic units
are "consoles" (base units) with legs, which can
have shelves, doors, or drawers; and "sort
modules", which mount on top of consoles, on
platforms, or are freestanding. Sort modules
include removable shelves that are either 10-3/4 or
12-3/4 inches wide, in overall widths that fit the
consoles.
NOTE **
NOTE ** See the manufacturer's "Specifications Guide" for
unit sizes and options. For construction
documents, the layout drawing does not need to
include exact model numbers, but should show sizes
and options that are available. The contractor or
furnishings installer will be responsible for
identifying all model numbers for ordering
purposes.
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 SECTION INCLUDES
NOTE ** Delete items below not required for project.
A. Incoming processing, with dump station, primary sort
station, and fine sort stations.
B. Reader station.
C. Satellite mail stations.
D. Outgoing processing, with branch mail, outgoing dump,
preparation, weighing, postage sort, metering, manifest,
and zip code presort stations.
E. Supervisor station.
F. Storage units.
G. Mail carts.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Submit under provisions of Section 01300.
B. Product Data: Manufacturer's specification data on
products.
C. Shop Drawings: Complete, detailed layout acceptable to
manufacturer for ordering purposes.
D. Selection Samples: Color card of laminate finishes, for
selection of colors.
E. Verification Samples: Actual laminate samples for
verification of pre-specified colors.
F. Maintenance Data: Ordering information on optional
components.
1.3 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING
A. Do not deliver furniture until spaces where it is to be
installed are complete and cleaned.
1.4 WARRANTY
A. Manufacturer's limited lifetime warranty.
PART 2 PRODUCTS
2.1 MANUFACTURERS
A. Provide products manufactured by Hamilton Sorter Co.,
Inc., 3158 Production Drive, Fairfield, OH 45014-4228.

B. Requests for substitution will be considered in
accordance with provisions of Section 01600.

2.2 FURNITURE COMPONENTS
A. Provide Hamilton Sorter "Masters" series components,
fully modular and reconfigurable.
1. Select type and size of units and accessories to
provide the functionality indicated on drawings.
NOTE ** Delete all but one of the four following paragraphs
on laminate colors. Special colors involve an
upcharge. Consult the manufacturer's
"Specification Guide" for color names or ask for
samples.
2. Laminate Colors: As selected by Architect from
manufacturer's standard range of colors.
3. Laminate Colors: As selected by Architect from
manufacturer's full range of standard and special
colors.
4. Laminate Colors: As indicated on drawings.
5. Laminate Colors:
a. Work Surfaces: ___________.
b. Bases, Fronts, Modules, and Intermediate Shelves:
_________.
c. Edge Banding: __________.
NOTE ** Delete one of the following two paragraphs. Black
aluminum finish is not recommended for very heavy
duty operations. Other colors may be available -
consult manufacturer.
6. Aluminum: Natural anodized.
7. Aluminum: Powder coated, textured black.
B. Consoles: Extruded aluminum frame and legs, assembled
with machine screws, designed to enclose all edges of
panels; top front edge contoured, enclosing edge of work
surface.
1. Leg, Back, and Filler Panels: 5/8 inch (16 mm) thick
particleboard, faced on both sides with plastic
laminate.
2. Work Surfaces: 11/16 inch (17.5 mm) thick
particleboard, backed with 0.027 inch (0.7 mm)
phenolic backer.
NOTE ** Delete all but one of the following four work
surface descriptions. Plastic laminate is
standard, the other finishes cost more. If more
than one finish is required, edit the text to
indicate where each is to be used.
3. Work Surface Finish: Mar- and stain-resistant high
pressure plastic laminate.
4. Work Surface Finish: Impact-resistant styrene.
5. Work Surface Finish: Impact-resistant ABS plastic.
6. Work Surface Finish: Stainless steel.
NOTE ** The following paragraphs are optional. Delete if
not required.
7. Provide matching laminate inserts in exposed faces of
frame members.
8. Provide adjustable legs, for total height of 28 to 32
inches (711 to 812 mm).
9. Provide wheels where indicated.
10. Provide dump rims where indicated.
11. Provide internal fittings indicated.
12. Provide cable cutouts with plastic grommets where
indicated.
13. Provide two separate cable raceways in units
requiring cable cutouts.
C. Sort Modules: Plastic laminate covered particleboard; 1
inch thick vertical ends and 5/8 inch (16 mm) thick top,
bottom, and interior partitions; concealed fasteners;
locking to console frame.
NOTE ** Delete all but one of the following four
paragraphs. If more than one size is required,
indicate on drawings.
1. Provide sections sized as indicated on drawings.
a. Standard size: 10-3/4 by 11-3/4 inch (273 by 299
mm) deep shelves.
b. Legal size: 10-3/4 by 15-7/8 inch (273 by 403 mm)
deep shelves.
c. Oversize: 12-3/4 by 15-7/8 inch (324 by 403 mm)
deep shelves.
2. Provide sections sized to fit standard, 10-3/4 by 11-
3/4 inch (273 by 299 mm) deep shelves.
3. Provide sections sized to fit legal size, 10-3/4 by
15-7/8 inch (273 by 403 mm) deep shelves.
4. Provide sections sized to fit oversize, 12-3/4 by 15-
7/8 inch (324 by 403 mm) deep shelves.
5. Each vertical section fitted with full depth
injection molded rigid PVC plastic shelf supports, at
1 inch on center.
NOTE ** Laminate-covered wood shelves are also available.
6. Provide removable and interchangeable polyethylene
shelves with full width aluminum indexing support
channel front and back, tested to hold minimum of 30
pounds (13.6 kg); manufacturer's standard quantity
for unit size.
7. Indexing channels covered with removable clear
plastic cover, holding paper index strips.
NOTE ** Integral platforms raise the sorting shelves above
the console surface, providing more work space.
Separate platforms are also available.
8. Integral platforms where platform space is indicated.
NOTE ** The following paragraphs are optional. Delete if
not required.
9. Provide open back modules with clear acrylic plastic
doors on back where indicated.
10. Provide clear acrylic plastic doors on front where
indicated.
11. Provide open back platform where indicated.
12. Provide clear acrylic display boards mounted at angle
at top of modules.
13. Provide drawers and file hangers where indicated.
14. Provide tackboard where indicated; fabric: _______.
15. Provide tasklights where indicate.
D. Freestanding Modules: Same construction and finish as
sort modules, with feet for floor installation.
NOTE ** Delete all but one of the following four
paragraphs. If more than one size is required,
indicate on drawings.
1. Provide sections sized as indicated on drawings.
a. Standard size: 10-3/4 by 11-3/4 inch (273 by 299
mm) deep shelves.
b. Legal size: 10-3/4 by 15-7/8 inch (273 by 403 mm)
deep shelves.
c. Oversize: 12-3/4 by 15-7/8 inch (324 by 403 mm)
deep shelves.
2. Provide sections sized to fit standard, 10-3/4 by 11-
3/4 inch (273 by 299 mm) deep shelves.
3. Provide sections sized to fit legal size, 10-3/4 by
15-7/8 inch (273 by 403 mm) deep shelves.
4. Provide sections sized to fit oversize, 12-3/4 by 15-
7/8 inch (324 by 403 mm) deep shelves.
5. Provide matching solid doors where indicated.
6. Provide bottom storage area without shelves where
indicated.
E. Bulk Sort Racks: Same construction as sort modules,
except:
1. Fixed, angled shelves with aluminum stop on front
edge.
2. Molded plastic bins with full width index channel and
index strips.
2.3 MATERIALS
A. Particleboard: Industrial grade, 40 to 50 pcf (640 to
800 kg/cu m), substraight.
B. Door Handles: Aluminum, with matching finish.
C. High Pressure Plastic Laminate: WilsonArt, Pionite, or
Formica.
PART 3 EXECUTION
3.1 EXAMINATION
A. Do not begin installation until spaces to receive
furniture have been completed and cleaned.
3.2 INSTALLATION
A. Install furniture and accessories as indicated on
drawings, level and plumb, with separate units securely
anchored.
B. Adjust legs to height required.
